Pavilion House represents a modern architectural marvel: The residence successfully integrates aesthetics, functionality, and sustainability. It was 2020 when this house in Bhilai, Chhattisgarh, India, was finally completed on a site area of 25,000 square feet with a gross built-up area of 12,500 square feet. This project was conceptualized and executed by New Delhi-based Flyingseeds Design Studio, led by Abhinav Chaudhary and Kakoli Bhattacharya, along with a talented team comprising Pushpendra Kashyap, Shubham Jain, and Akshita Rana.
This residence truly redefines the modern home by integrating traditional and global design principles with innovative solutions. It answers the changing needs of the house, incorporating lifestyle, luxury, and nature all together.
Design and Layout
The Pavilion House sits on a rectangular plot with an existing family house on the south-west edge and a vast garden to the north. The short was for a contemporary home, mainly for the new generation in the family, yet keeping in contact with the old house. The family loves throwing parties, and thus the house was designed to accommodate recreation while encouraging community involvement. On the ground floor, the house is open-plan, with rooms flowing smoothly into one large event space.
A Fragmental Wall in indigenous limestone featuring as the house’s structural and visual axis is perhaps the main element in its design. This wall is the thread that joins the old and new houses, guiding flow from the entrance through the living areas out to the pool. On the southern flank of the pool lies the glass Pavilion—a peaceful relaxation room opening onto the living room and a semicovered bar. The area is designed in a way that erases the line separating indoors and outdoors: the large glass panels maintain transparency, creating continuity between indoor and outdoor areas.
A big Plumeria tree standing tall in the northern garden became an influencing factor inside; part of the greenery was carved into the core of the house, developing a bright green courtyard lit up by the double-height glazing and north-facing skylight. It includes a south façade with a double-cavity wall that contains shading louvers for passive thermal insulation against very harsh Indian summers. The first and second floors house master bedrooms lined along the southern edge. The green bridge on the first floor connects the new and old structures, flanked by terraces with lightweight MS frames and tensile fabric canopies for protection against weathering conditions.
